Internal networks are a group of like interested contributors that are known to the business or organization. Participants can include vendors, contractors, customers, strategic partners, and investors, as well as employees. Collaborative technologies can be used to create robust networks that connect the interested contributors, and provide the supporting products that catalogue and manage the user generated knowledge.

External networks are designed for professional and non profit organizations. Users include the executive management, staff, members, and volunteers. External networks use social media products to extend the organization’s reach to aid in membership retention and recruitment, keep the message relevant, and manage projects and membership. External networks can also be used for brand awareness and customer contact.
